Duty (le devoir) — what morality obliges independently of inclination or reward. Kant grounded it in the categorical imperative — act only on a maxim you could will as universal law; the Stoics in accord with reason and one's role; utilitarians reduced it to consequences; Bergson distinguished a closed morality of pressure from an open morality of aspiration.
