Langage

phil:notion:langage

Language (le langage) — the sign-system by which we think and communicate, and the gap between word and thing. Plato's Cratylus asked whether names are natural or conventional; Aristotle treated meaning through convention; Rousseau traced language to passion; the twentieth century tied meaning to use (Wittgenstein) and to the arbitrary sign (Saussure).
