Reason (la raison) — the faculty of principles, inference and justification, and its limits. Plato trusted reason to grasp the Forms; the rationalists (Descartes) made it the source of knowledge; the empiricists (Hume) bounded it by experience; Kant critiqued reason's own limits; Nietzsche exposed the non-rational beneath it.
