The Unconscious (l'inconscient) — mental processes outside awareness that shape thought and action, and whether the notion is coherent. Leibniz spoke of small perceptions; Schopenhauer of a blind Will; Freud made the unconscious the core of psychic life, read through repression, dreams and slips; Sartre contested it as bad faith — a self that deceives itself.
